Internationally Renowned Calligrapher Professor Guodong Li Giving His Work to the Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon
(World Journal in NY) On October 10th, 2012, internationally renowned calligrapher, Prof. Guodong Li gives the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon his magnificent work “Longevity” as a blessing for the Spring Festival and the beginning of Ban’s second term.
Ban Ki-moon is really pleased. He slowly unfolds the scroll with Prof. Li’s “Longevity” and views the work carefully and pleasantly with the Representative of China to the U.N. Baodong Li. Ban Ki-moon, who is quite knowledgeable in and deeply appreciates calligraphy, holds Prof. Guodong Li’s hand and says to him, “it is really nice to meet you again; I was once at the your exhibition at the U.N., and I sincerely appreciate for your contribution to the peace of the world and the communication of the international culture by the use of Chinese calligraphy.” Prof. Li’s work was complimented by Ban Ki-moon for being created with great elegance and magnificence. Ban also sends his gratitude to Prof. Li for giving him this meaningful gift at the beginning of the New Year and his second term. After appreciating the work, Ban Ki-moon happily folds the scroll by himself.
Professor Guodong Li states, “People in China always say, ‘benevolent people live long; their longevity is comparable to the southern mountain.’ Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is a benevolent person who travels around the world and devotes his life into promoting the peace of the world; in the coming of the year of Dragon, I hope him and his wife will live long and healthily.” At the same time, the host expresses this sentiment in English, “Professor Li’s calligraphic work symbolizes the longevity of the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the United Nation.” The guests are amused.
Ban Ki-moon shared his understanding and insights of Chinese calligraphy. He looks back to the experience of learning Chinese calligraphy the first time fifty-years ago. He thinks it is very challenging to practice Chinese calligraphy despite of the beauty of the finished work, for the writing of the Chinese characters is not as simple as they look; only diligent studying and continuous exercise produce excellent works; normal people are unable to reach the level of Prof. Li’s works. Representative of China to the U.N. Baodong Li says “Happy Chinese New Year” during his address. He also says that the development of calligraphy has great extensiveness and inclusiveness which is consistent with the spirit of the promotion of cultural pluralism and harmony of the U.N. The holding of the exhibition of Chinese arts and calligraphy during the New Year reflects the fact that Chinese calligraphy has gone to the world and the importance of increasing communication with foreigners by calligraphic works.
During the New Year welcoming exhibition of arts and calligraphy on the 10th, Guodong Li exhibits his attention-gathering works “Dragon”, “Tiger”, and “Harmony”. Aside from appreciating the works, the non-Chinese guests try to practice writing Chinese characters with full of interest.
Ban Ki-moon collected Prof. Guodong Li’s work “Good Fortune” in 2010. During the calligraphy exhibition in the U.N. in August, 2011, Ban Ki-moon arrived at the exhibition to take a closer look, and he gave his compliment to the Chinese artists for conveying the idea of “Peace and Borderless Love” of the U.N. in the form of art.
