中国常驻联合国大使李保东：两人联合创作是文化友好交流的象征
Baodong Li: the cooperative creation of the two masters is the emblem of the friendly communication of culture.
中国常驻联合国代表李保东大使在发言中， 代表中国常驻联合国代表团，祝贺“李国栋及丽迪亚·雷诺德中西合璧联合国艺术展”开幕。他指出，今天画展展出的作品是由丽迪亚·雷诺德女士和李国栋先生在过去一年多时间里联手创作的。在创作中，李国栋先生先在宣纸上写下中国书法，留出一半空间给丽迪亚·雷诺德女士，由她以西方绘画形式将空白处填满，形成一幅幅以西方绘画技法诠释中国书法的奇妙画作。他们的作品是真正意义的中西合璧。这些作品富有创新精神，令人耳目一新，引起了纽约艺术界的关注。李先生是一位造诣很深的医生，用自己的爱心救助过很多病人。他对中国文化、中国书法有独到见解，并取得了很大的成就。李先生和丽迪女士的联合创作，是文化友好交流的象征。两位艺术家的合作，是人民友好交流的范例。联合国一贯倡导多元文化和谐共荣。今天的画展，是世界不同文化相互尊重、彼此借鉴、共生共荣的生动体现，是对联合国宗旨和精神的良好诠释，具有重要的现实意义。
During the address, the Ambassador of China to the U.N. Baodong Li, on the behalf of the Mission of China to the U.N., congratulates on the opening of “The U.N. Art Exhibition of Guodong Li and Lydia Reinhold.” He points out, the works exhibited today were co-created by Lydia Reinhold and Mr. Guodong Li in the past year. In the creation, Mr. Guodong Li would first write down the Chinese calligraphy and leave a half blank space for Lydia who then fills the blank with the form of Western painting. Their works represent the real combination of the Chinese and Western styles. These works have attracted the attention of the New York art circle because of their unique innovation. Mr. Li is also a very accomplished doctor who has saved lives of many patients. The cooperation of the two artists is the emblem of people’s friendly communication. The United Nations always promotes cultural pluralism and mutual prosperity. Today’s exhibition is a live demonstration of the cultural respect and cooperative development of the countries in the world, and it is also a great annotation of the U.N.’s mission and spirit.

Lydia’s Expression
李国栋大师的书法作品令人深受启迪。依我看来，汉字符号像一个比喻其含义的动作手势。我将注意力集中在黑色汉字图像在白纸上的演化，这些静止的符号发人深思。我感觉到这些字的精髓、李国栋大师铿锵有力的书法力量。每个主题都被他精湛的艺术理解所表达，让人马上辨认出他具有美感的个人艺术风格—这就是李大师的艺术。观赏这这些汉字，我跟随着里面的，被它们自身的动力所带动。这使我产生挥毫作画的冲动。这是对神秘字符的一种奇怪的的回声。这是不是穿透一种秘密语言所带来的喜悦？当你认为你在接近这些字的实质含义的时候，你同时又发现在原来它，就像海滩上的波浪忽进忽退一样。我喜欢把书法艺术和舞蹈设计相比较--它们都是灵感的源泉、创新的动力，与墨汁在纸上的运动何舞台上的动作有直接联系。与这样一位高超的大师在一起，我非常有幸能通过这种视觉艺术来体验一种全新的交流方式，通过审美的互动接近和尝试理解中国书法的精神。一种想要超越文字理解和被理解的欲望，一种无声的交流，一个让人探索的可塑舞蹈编节目：一段新的冒险旅程。。。。。
Master Guodong Li’s calligraphy has inspired people profoundly. In my view, Chinese characters are like gestures which are analogous to their meaning. I pay my attention to the black characters that evolve on the write paper, and these stationary symbols evoke our thinking. I can feel the essence of these characters and the power of Guodong Li’s calligraphy. Every theme is exquisitely illustrated by his artistic understanding which makes people recognize the beauty of his artistic style quickly, and this is Li’s art. Looking at these characters, I am also moved by their momentum, and this gets me stimulated in creating paintings. This impulse is a strange echo to the mysterious characters, and is this also the pleasure of understanding a secret language? When you are close to grasp the meaning of these characters, at the same time, you will find they are continuously moving towards and away from you like a wave on the beach. I like to make the comparison between calligraphic art and choreography; the movement of ink on the paper is somehow related to the action of dancing on the stage, and they both have the power to inspire and perfect innovation. With a calligraphy master like Li, I think I am fortunate to have the chance to experience this new way of art communication and understand the spirit of Chinese calligraphy via interactive appreciation. It is a feeling of exceeding the desire of understanding and being understood of the characters, a silent communication, a dancing program worth exploring, and a new adventure.
李国栋感言
Guodong Li’s Expression
世间万物，都有其结构，汉字也一样。汉字的外形结构是具体的，具象的，一横一竖，一笔一划，一点一捺，有的像飞禽，有的像走兽，有的像竹叶，有的像树干，有的像茅屋……但就汉字的内部结构，即其内容而言，却有无限的想像空间，这是汉字几千年历久不衰的原因。
Lydia Reinhold女士是一位真正的艺术家。她能从一个汉字的外形，看到一个字在飞动（如“飞”字，“龙”字）的动态美感，进而以西方画家的笔触，线条，表述她对中国汉字的理解。她对中国特有的艺术“书法”的理解，非常到位和完整，这与她高深的艺术修养是分不开的。我对她以西方绘画语言，西方绘画技巧来诠释中国书法精髓，印象深刻，也非常感动。
我与Lydia Reinhold女士此次携手合作，以东西方艺术的语言，技巧，在一张张宣纸上共同进行创新性的艺术创作。这种艺术创作形式是首创，希望今后有更多更大的发展空间。
艺术家是有国籍的，但是艺术是不分国界的，艺术家的心灵是相通的。我向往通过此次合作，促进东西方艺术交流与沟通，净化人们的思想，美化人们的生活，促进东西方友谊，世界安宁、和谐与和平。
Everything has its own structure, so does the Chinese character. The outline of the characters are very concrete. Some are like birds; some are like beasts; some are like the leaves of bamboos; some are like trunks, and some are like cottages. However, the interior of these characters has unlimited potential for imagination based on the content and meaning, and this is why Chinese writing has lasted and prospered for thousands of years.
Ms. Lydia Reinhold is a real artist. She can perceive the motional beauty of a character from its shape and express properly her understanding of the Chinese character in the form of Western art. Her comprehensive and accurate understanding of calligraphy is closely related to her deep apprehension of art. I was really impressed by her articulation of the essence of Chinese calligraphy by Western painting techniques.
Me and Ms. Lydia Reinhold’s first cooperation is creating innovative art on the same paper by both Eastern and Western styles. This artistic form has never been presented before, and I hope there are more spaces for development in the future.
Artists do belong to different countries, but art itself is not restricted by borders because the artists’ spirits are connected. We have promoted Eastern-Western art communication, purified people’s thinking, perfected our lives, and advocated the friendship, harmony, and peace between the Eastern and Western world.
